Why are my statistics reporting differently in Analog, Awstats and Webalizer?

It is possible, and common, for the provided web stats programs Awstats, Analog and Webalizer to disagree on the number of visitors reported (for example, one of the statistical analysis programs may say you have had 30 visitors and the other may report you have had 120 visitors).

Each of the stats programs calculate things in a different manner - for example, Analog doesn't report visitor numbers (just the number of "distinct IP addresses/hosts" reported), Webalizer counts a visit as a single IP address being used within the reporting time period (which will cause AOL users - who tend to come through a limited number of proxy servers - to be misreported), Awstats ignores "robots/spiders" and only uses HTML page requests to count unique visitors and counts all requests made within a 60 minute window to be from the same user.

You can find more information about the definitions on the http://www.analog.cx/ Analog Website, on the http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/ Webalizer website and on the http://awstats.sourceforge.net/ Awstats website.

You are, of course, free to download the "Raw Apache Log Files" via your cPanel control panel and process them with your own log analysis tool with your own settings.
